Double Short Movie Reviews.

July 25, 2009

It’s been a while but I recently watched two movies. Instead of giving full reviews, I’ll just sum up my opinions in one paragraphs for each. Enjoy and do watch these lovely movies.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Unlike the billions of Harry Potter fans that watched the Half-Blood Prince on a sneak preview last week, I just watched it a week after. And for all the hype and the delays, the movie is remarkably impressive as the movie is much more darker with it’s noticeable intertwining teen romances. After surviving the last installment of Voldemort’s minions and the upheaval of Hogwarts, Harry Potter is now older and trying to find ways to defeat his enemy. The movie is 2.5 hours long with less action and more characterization, but the cinematography is breathtaking and really captures Harry’s world. The three leads (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson) are impressive in their grown-ups roles and lends well to the overarching series. To my surprise, a main character dies leading well into the final book or the last two movie installments. I can’t wait to see what happens next but I’ll keep my cool.

My Rating= B+

Wanted (2008)

Director Timur Bekmambetov brings Mark Millar’s violent graphic novel to life, only slightly different. The characters look different and instead of super-villains, it’s assassins. All fair since those particular facts work well within the confines of the cinematic realm. James McAvoy is a pushover that is whisked away to a world of world-altering assassins. Angelina Jolie is in the movie, and lends herself as the dangerous assassin with enough sex appeal to destroy the Roman Catholic Church. There are many great twists abound with an intriguing plot coupled with a magnificent performance by James McAvoy. It’s very violent, but the matrix-time stopping has become a bit of a cliché. Either way, fun ride to check out.

My Rating= B-

Hairspray Livens The Castro Theatre For One Night!

July 25, 2009

On July 24, San Francisco’s The Castro Theatre had one of their special sing-a-longs. This time, it was with 2007’s Hairspray. Besides falling in love with this film’s premise, upbeat songs, kooky characters, and 50s nostalgia, this was the perfect movie for a sing-a-long. It was energetic as usual, with the addition of fun gestures and a goodie bag: whoopy cushions, inflatable microphones, boos for segregations, and hisses for the dastardly villains. But what made this musical different from the previous sing-a-longs (The Little Mermaid, Grease, Mamma Mia) was that the movie dealt with the issues of racism and segregation. That’s perfect for a place like Castro, and the participants marched through the alleys with such convictions and happiness. A great movie to watch at the Castro Theater. Plus, Zac Efron is hot! I lost my voice because I screamed every time I saw him on the big screen.
