So I finally had the chance to watch Mamma Mia! The movie. I was going to watch it in the theaters, but I never came around it, especially with competition from the Dark Knight. And as a fan of musicals, I’d have to say that Mamma Mia is one of the best in its genre. Sure, it’s way over the top but it works in it’s genre. The plot is simple: a young girl is getting married and doesn’t know who her father is. After reading her mother’s diary, she invites three potential men that might be her father. A lot of mayhem happens thereafter with a lot of comedic performances from Meryl Streep, Pierce Bronson, Amanda Siegfried, and the rest of the cast. But the greatest parts of the movie are the songs: ABBA songs. Songs like “Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie” and “Mamma Mia” blend cohesively in the plot. And the cinematography only makes the movie shine as the colors are vibrant, and thus complimenting the Greek location. There is also eye candy with actor Dominic Cooper as the groom and his fellow mates. He plays a minor character but I hope to see him more in films. I won’t spoil the ending, but the film does resolve itself. So if you haven’t seen it, go watch it cause I bet you’ll be dancing to ABBA later on.
My Rating: B+
