In the past weeks, I’ve been listening to Marilyn Monroe’s version of “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” I love it. It was originally done by Carol Channing in the Broadway version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but Marilyn does it better. So much more so that it has become iconic even being listed as the 12th most important movie song of all time by the American Film Institute. With so much adoration, there are bound to be an endless of array of imitators from Kylie Minogue to Anna Nicole Smith to Nicole Scherzinger and to the most respected, Madonna with “Material Girl.” Nicole Kidman did a wonderful amalgam of Madonna’s version and Monroe’s version in the movie musical Moulin Rouge! while Beyonce did a modern twist for the Emporio Armani ad. Because one of my closet friends burned me a copy of Moulin Rouge!, I now have three versions to rock out to. Thank you, ladies!
