The April Solicitations for the X-Men titles were released this morning and I noticed something afoul: the villains are running amok and causing some mayhem. What’s good drama without some really good villains, right? It looks like they’re coming back with a vengeance just as the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) obtains ultimate power in the Marvel Universe with the most powerful villains by his side (Doctor Doom, Namor, The Hood, Loki, Emma Frost). The X-Men will be having a world of pain in San Francisco, and I’m deliciously excited. Here’s the main titles (and this might seem convoluted history of you don‘t know the X-Men that well):
- Uncanny X-Men: Besides dealing with mutant hate crimes and Sentinels, it looks like the flagship title will be returning Cyclops’ dead wife/Jean’s clone, Madelyne Pryor. And with her she’s assembling Lady mastermind, Chimera, Lady Deathstrike, and Spiral as the Sisterhood. So unexpected, Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker. Thank You!
- X-Men: Legacy: Over on Xavier’s somewhat “solo” title, he’s making amends with Rogue and Gambit while dealing with Danger, the killing robot. What’s the most powerful telepath to do?
- X-Force: Now Cyclop’s black ops team has already dealt with the Marauders clones, the mutant vampiric Selene, the C-list villain The Vanisher, Cameron Hodge, Bolivar Trask, Graydon Creed, and Bastion, who else is left? Well, Stryfe is next as the Messiah War crossover with the Cable title deals with the first mutant birth since the mutant decimation. What? Who knew it was coming when writers Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle mentioned the Legacy Virus. Oh yeah, and Bishop’s still around to kill the baby.
- War of Kings: And in the cosmos crossover, the X-Men in space (Havok, Polaris, Marvel Girl) are dealing with the mad, power-hungry Vulcan as the Shi’ar emperor deals with Vulcan and the Inhumans.
And all the while, Matt Fraction has big plans for The Big Bad Magneto in the Uncanny X-Men title with Emma Frost causing trouble for everyone else in the Marvel Universe. Now, I’m excited, but I won’t be buying these comics until they’re released in trade paperback format. But it’s nice to see the change is a brewing in this brave new “dark“ world.
