The Castro Theater Loves The Moulin Rouge.

Last week, the Castro Theater presented a mix of music and film called Phantasmagoria. My eyes widened when the theather chose to play Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge! It’s a fantastic film that needs to be seen on the big screen with so many gay men. Everyone was awestruck with Nicole Kidman’s regal appearance (and death) and Ewan McGregor’s dashing good looks. As such, the movie is well known for incorporating contemporary music within an olde early 20th century setting. I loved  Elton John‘s “Your Song,” and the Police’s “Roxanne,” but my absolute favorite is still Nicole Kidman singing “Sparkling Diamonds” which blends Madonna and Marilyn Monroe so effortlessly. After the movie, I went to sing my heart out at the Mint with my favorite karaoke song: Madonna’s “Vogue.” San Francisco is so lively on a Wednesday.
